Casey McKeel founded Thread Coffee in 2012 among friends who wanted to create a business that fostered solidarity between social movements around the world. Thread Coffee was founded as a worker-owned cooperative, a democratically-run operation that empowered Baltimore-based workers to take ownership in the business in which they worked. When searching for an importer that was in alignment with these goals, Cooperative Coffees was the obvious choice. “Thread Coffee is ready to become more involved with our producer partners through membership in Cooperative Coffees. We are looking forward to adding value and gaining experience through governance work in the cooperative.”

From humble beginnings in 2012, Thread Coffee has built a solid wholesale and direct-to-consumer business while elevating the stories of farmer cooperatives supported by Coop Coffees. Holly Kent-Payne and Nani Ferreira-Mathew became worker owners in 2018 and in 2021, Casey McKeel left the project to pursue a career in finance. Thread Coffee’s worker-owner model provides intimate and empowering employment and gives priority to women and queer identified workers in Baltimore City.
